In early April 2022, reports of poor working conditions appeared in the American company Nintendo, The company and an outside recruitment firm are accused of “coordinated activities” and “coercive measures” to prevent union formationand the Part-time workers and contractors struggle to secure time off and decent wages.
On May 23, 2022, Mike Hume, a gaming journalist for the Washington Post, spoke to Reggie Fels Amy, the former president of Nintendo of America, who said: Part of the Fils-Aimé book launch – Many of his questions dealt with unions and mistreatment of temporary workers.
Here’s what Reggie said:
“[When I was at Nintendo of America] I made it my priority to have a culture within the organization that was welcoming… which promoted all the workers we had… and so, these reports are really worrying.
I didn’t have a position as a company leader where we had a broad problem with our partner base. he was not there.
What I would say today is that every organization needs to seriously look at their hiring practices, especially in this time of COVID, and make sure that they are progressive, that they welcome all of their employees whether they are working full time or not, and to make sure they have the policies and principles in place To have a welcoming work environment… and to make sure that there are no systemic issues that occur. “
Hume then asked Phils Amy what leaders can do to ensure worker satisfaction, to which Phils Amy replied that “you cannot be directly involved in every single issue,” but that a leader’s job is to effectuate change from top to bottom. :
“I think the role of company leadership is to set a culture in the organization and set the style. And that tone starts with being open and having every employee in the organization who can come to you and make a problem, and that’s definitely the culture I championed when I was at Nintendo.
“There is a lot that I can do as president of the company, but if I have the right mindset, the right culture across the organization, then the entire organization can do so much more than I can do individually.
“When problems arise, you have to get serious about them – you can’t ignore them, you can’t push them under the rug, you have to deal with them, deal with them quickly.”
When asked directly about unions, Amy Phils spoke broadly:
“The past 2.5 years have created some really tough situations…Doing the work and doing a good job has been even more difficult.”
“In many industries, unionization is a good thing. As a leader, you have to look hard, and if that’s what your employees want, you need to address that, embrace it, and move on.”
“I have worked in industries that have high levels of unionization. This is not a good or bad thing, it is a position that you, as a leader, as an executive, need to manage just like any other challenge, issue or opportunity you face.”
On the increase in the number of acquisitions and mergers of companies:
“Do I think that as a result of these acquisitions, there will actually be more game development companies? I do, and I say this because as a result of these mergers and acquisitions, there will be high-level talent who will not be satisfied with being part of this larger organization, and they will want to continue creating content. their own, and create their own intellectual property rights.
“So I think this will lead to a lot of so-called ‘Double-A’, or big indie developers, who are going to make great content in the industry.”
There are, of course, other anecdotes here and there — like Reggie Fells Amy referring to himself as the “bold marketer” who came to turn things around at Nintendo, and that at least some of his stunts were a “comprehensive company decision.”[s]To move Nintendo in a new direction – so we’ve provided the full talk above (the talk begins at 14:33).
