Do Not Disturb mode has been standard on smartphones for a long time, and it’s excellent for keeping distractions out. It’s a great feature, but people avoid using it for fear of missing important calls and messages from certain people. do not worry!
Here’s how to get around that so you can use Do Not Disturb without worry.
First, activate
Do Not Disturb does exactly this — it silences calls, alerts, and notifications while your phone is locked (check Notification Center for what you’ve been missing). You can set it up while you’re working or when you need a break.
But what if someone you care about tries to pass? This is the reason for the exceptions. We’ll show you how to set up Do Not Disturb exactly the way you want it.
Let these people pass
Here’s how to allow specific people’s messages to appear when using Do Not Disturb mode:
- go to the Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb.
- Faucet the people And be sure Allow notifications from Examined.
- Faucet Add people And choose from your contact list.
- Faucet did when you finish.
What about phone calls? There is a separate setting for that:
- go to the Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb.
- Faucet the peoplethen tap the option next to Allow calls from (The default is call only)
- Choose Only people are allowed To allow the people you added in the steps above to call your phone.

Bypass Do Not Disturb with the Find My app
Find My allows you to find your lost device by giving you directions to it and playing a sound. This vital tool goes beyond the Do Not Disturb feature, too.
Family Sharing allows you to share your location with family members and help them find their device if it goes missing. But even if you don’t lose your phone, people you share your location with can ping your phone when it’s in Do Not Disturb mode to get your attention.
Here’s how to set up Family Sharing:
- go to the Settings> [your name] > Family involvementthen scroll down and tap Location sharing.
- Click on the name of the family member you want to share your location with. You can repeat this step for each family member with whom you want to share your location. Each family member gets a message that you’re sharing your location and can choose to share their location with you.
- You can stop sharing your location with any family member at any time.
After you share your location with members of your Family Sharing group, they can see your device in the Find My app and send an alert to your phone if needed.
Bypass all focus modes
Apple’s Focus modes — Do Not Disturb, Personal, Sleep and Work — can be customized similarly to making exceptions for contacts.
But there is a setting that will override all focus modes and allow people’s calls or messages to be identified. It’s called emergency override, and here’s how to set it up:
- Opens Contacts and select a contact, then tap Modification.
- Faucet ring tone and run emergency override To allow calls to pass through all focus modes.
- Faucet did.
- Back on the main editing page for this contact, tap text tone and run emergency override Allows text messages to reach across all focus modes.
- Faucet did.
