The US government has imposed sanctions on Iran’s morality police after the death of a woman accused of wearing her Islamic headscarf loosely. Thursday’s sanctions came after at least nine protesters were killed in clashes with Iranian security forces since the violence erupted at the weekend. The Treasury says Iranian officials oversee organizations that use violence to suppress peaceful protesters, political opponents, and women’s rights activists. A powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit Mexico, causing at least two deaths, destroying buildings and landslides. The quake struck early Thursday, just after 1 a.m., just three days after a 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck western and central Mexico.
