National Football Foundation (NFF) and College Hall of Fame inductees Announced earlier this week That the annual winter meeting of the coordinators of the Division I Conference of Football Officials has been taking place for the tenth year in Irving, Texas. The meeting, which took place January 24-25, was chaired by Steve Shaw, the college football official’s (CFO) national coordinator. The meeting has been held at NFF headquarters since 2013, and this year it took place at the Omni Las Colinas Hotel down the street from NFF headquarters with plans to return in 2024 to the NFF site. “We are once again grateful to the National Football League for welcoming our winter meeting coordinators to their hometown,” Xu said. “The institution and administrative side of college football are there to make this game better, and the coordinators are excited to continue our relationship. The partnership with the NFF is very important to the coordinators in our joint work on behalf of this great game.”
The CFO was formed in 2008 by the NCAA and the Association of Collegiate Commissioners to ensure consistent enforcement of NCAA football playing rules and policies across the country. Mid-American Conference Commissioner Dr. John Steinbrecher is currently Chairman of the Board of CFOs. Officiating coordinators from all 23 NCAA Division I conferences, covering both the Football Bowl Subdivision and the Football Bowl Subdivision, participated in the meeting. The meeting covers the latest interpretations of the rules, appointment mechanisms and other aspects of taking office. Irving-based College Football Playoff executive Bill Hancock also met with the group.
“Collaborative conferences invest heavily and work tirelessly to ensure managerial efficiency, and the coordinators for each conference make up the core group of dedicated professionals who care deeply about achieving success,” said Hatchell. “We are delighted to have this important meeting again in Las Colinas, and we are thrilled to welcome them to the city and support their efforts.”
The January meeting is one of two annual meetings held, allowing CFO members to regularly exchange ideas, analyze video, discuss playing situations and ensure consistent application of the rules between conferences across the country. Officiating coordinators play a leading role in their conferences in overseeing all aspects of football management, including coaching, evaluating, and assigning officials to games in both the regular season and the postseason. In addition to hosting the meeting, the NFF supports the CFO by distributing rule changes at the start of each season.
Shaw, who became the Football Officials’ CFO National Coordinator in March 2020, previously served in the Southeastern Conference and Sun Belt Conference as the Officiating Coordinator. He also serves as Secretary of Rules Editor for the NCAA Football Rules Committee, a position critical to the development of competition rules and policies. Shaw excelled as a head referee for 15 years in the SEC, earning 14 postseason assignments, including two appearances in the national tournament. He has been a pioneer in revamping the mechanics of sports administration and advancing the use of technology to assist officials.
