Sargent, Pepe, Ferreira on US World Cup squad list

New York (AFP) – Josh Sargent is back in the USA squad for the first time in a year, being named as a striker alongside Ricardo Pepe and Jesus Ferreira in the Americans’ last two World Cup friendlies.

Defenders Serginio Dest, Chris Richards, Sam Vines and winger Gio Reina were among the 26 players selected by coach Greg Berhalter on Wednesday after missing the previous four games in May and June.

The Americans, ranked 13th in 23rd, play Japan on September 23 in Dusseldorf, Germany, and Saudi Arabia, ranked 53rd, four days later in Murcia, Spain. Berhalter plans to announce his 26-man squad for the World Cup on November 9, 12 days before the Americans’ opening game in the tournament in Qatar.

Six players have been left out of the last spring games: defenders George Bello, Eric Palmer-Brown and Anthony Robinson, midfielder Christian Roldan, winger Tim Weh and striker Haji Wright.

Robinson, Roldan Weah and goalkeeper Zach Stephen were absent from action due to injuries. Steffen withdrew from the spring roster for family reasons.
